Hope - The Urge To Live

By Ashish Gupta

'Aashayein' or crudely translated to English as "Hopes" is what drives every human being, to strive harder and achieve better things, to want more from life than what we are dealt to start with.

A brilliantly made film with Pondicherry as a setting, Aashayein, Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor and starring John Abraham, is a magical journey of joy, wonder, dreams, wishes and ultimately hope that teaches us to live life.

Aashayein is the story of Rahul Sharma (John Abraham), a compulsive gambler who waits for that big moment when he can finally do the things he's been dreaming all his life. Finally that day arrives when he, despite repeated promises to his doting girlfriend, Nafisa (Sonal Sehgal), wagers their life savings on an impossible bet and wins! But fate has something altogether different in store for him - he is diagnosed with cancer and has 90 days to live.

Angry, confused, and taking the biggest gamble of his life, he leaves home and the life he knew and runs away to a hospice, Padmashreya, a beautiful resort like place where the terminally ill come to spend their last days in peace. At the hospice, Rahul meets a host of colorful characters - Padma (Anaitha Nair) a young girl with a face of an angel and the mind of the devil who becomes his best friend, G. Parthasarthy (Girish Karnad), a retired bank manager who for the sake of a few meaningless principles has alienated his family, Madhu (Farida Jalal), a lady with a past who is shunned by the guests at the hospice and finally Govinda a 10 year old boy who loves comic books and mangoes and in whose made up stories one finds the answers to life.

All of them, with their quirks and their different outlooks on life and mutually shared experiences, teach Rahul the real joy of living a life to its fullest. 'Aashayein' apparently moved the actor so much that he decided to do it for free. Same is the case with movie's director Nagesh Kukunoor. "John and Nagesh felt this movie is beyond economics. This film, according to them is about something much deeper. The film for them is about hope. The story was such that they wanted to tell the story to the audiences," said a source close to actor.

"The story is very positive and John and Nagesh were very confident about it. Even when it got delayed they stayed confident and never lost hope. Everyone was pleasantly surprised to know of this sweet and considerate gesture of both of them. They feel it's completely worth it," the source added.

A new comer to the Bollywood Film scene, Sonal Sehgal, playing the character of Nafisa, is a breath of fresh air adding that her own unique style to the movie. Her character lives by a simple rule: "Love always wins" while John's character, Rahul Sharma lives by: "Ab Mujhko Jeena". Bollywood heartthrob John Abraham was so moved with the story of his upcoming film 'Aashayein' that he decided do the film for free. It is hitting the screens on August 27 and the actor believes that it will touch a chord with the audience. - 40727
