Which Will Ferrell Movies Should You Watch?

By Stephanie Walter

Talented funny-man Will Ferrell has performed in a number of Hollywoods biggest comedies. At more than a dozen films, however, Ferrells filmography can be a problem for viewers who only want to see Ferrells best work. For these viewers, which Will Ferrell movies should they begin with? Which ones are the best?

Ferrell has attracted fans around the world for his unique approach to comedy. After performing with The Groundlings, a sketch comedy group, Ferrells long stint with Saturday Night Live put him on the road to a prolific film career.

Ferrells youngest fans might find his kids movies as the best place to start. Elf, Kicking and Screaming, and Curious George are all movies made for children though some adults will find them interesting as well. Elf, wherein Ferrell plays an elf who departs Santas North Pole workshop, has received good notices for Ferrells performance. Curious George, however, based upon characters made famous in a series of books by author H. A. Rey, is perhaps the strongest of Ferrells work for kids.

Land of the Lost and Bewitched are two of Ferrells films that recreate ideas that originated as television programs. Released during the summer blockbuster season, Land of the Lost used its big special effects budget to recreate the giant dinosaurs and mythical creatures that appeared in the 1970s Saturday morning TV show. Though Bewitched spent less on digital enhancement, its storyline is more engaging.

Ferrells best works, however, are those wherein he has had the most opportunity to display his own brand of weirdness. In Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Blades of Glory Ferrell puts his humor to its best effect. Drawing on 1970s images, Anchorman tells the story of Ron Burgundy, a newscaster in San Diego who is challenged in the ratings by a new woman on the set. This movie is distinguished by several non-linear aspects to the storyline including a bizarre recreation of a scene from West Side Story. In Talladega Nights, Ferrell is joined by shock comic Sacha Baron Cohen in a send-up of NASCAR. Blades of Glory, which ends this trilogy, is a hilarious play on the world of figure skating.

On the whole, Will Ferrell movies are a good use of your time. They will provide you with lots of laughs. - 40727
