Making R&B Beats

By Jason Harold

How do you create your own R&B beats? Well, it really is no different from making a hip hop or pop beat. A lot of beat makers make this harder than it needs to be, but it's really easier than you think. Take a quick look at five of the fundamental steps you could take to create your own R&B beats.

1. Pick An R&B Artist You Want To Make A Beat For: Doing this can make your beat creating procedure simpler. What you can do is imagine your favorite R&B artist on your beat. Take a listen to their song and get a feel for their style.

2. Formatting: The next thing you must turn your attention to is the formatting of your song. As soon as you format you must arrange the intro, verse, chorus, and bridge in the order you want it. You can listen to different R&B songs and see how they formatted their song. The most basic beat making format for an R&B beat is to start with a 2 bar intro, 16 bar verse, 8 bar chorus, 16 bar verse, 8 bar chorus, 16 bar verse, and 8 bar chorus.

3. Lay Down The Beat: Once you're laying down the beat you could begin with the drums and follow up with a kick, snare, or hi hat. You can layer your beat with any instrument you think will be a good fit for your R&B song. Out of all the instruments, you should pay the most attention to the drums because the drums are the most important when you make your own R&B beat.

4. Layering: After you lay down your beat with the various instruments and melodies it's time to layer everything. Layering is what makes your beat sound full and complete.

5. Mixing: The mix down is very important because if your beat has a poor mixing quality then all the time you have put into making your beat will be wasted. You must start with every track individually once you're mixing. You have to solo every track and make every one of them sound as great as you desire it to be. - 40727
